Edward Nigma had been a cheat all his life, especially when it came to the solving of puzzles. Later, he turned his love of puzzles into a career by running a crooked carnival puzzle game. But E. Nigma, yearning for greater glory and wealth, decided to use his love of riddles to match wits with the Gotham City police and Batman, sending them fiendishly complex clues to his forthcoming crimes, crimes committed as...The Riddler!

After the breakout at Arkham Asylum, the Riddler gathered Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Two-Face and escaped in the latter's armored van. After a brief crime spree in Gotham, he and his team went to his headquarters. Here he described his plan to break into the Gotham Gold Reserve and detailed the items they would need to accomplish it.
First he travelled with Clayface to a bank in Gotham to steal the key to the Reserve's vault. Shortly after blowing their way in, Batman and Robin arrived, who fought and defeated the protoplasmic villian whilst Riddler watched. After narrowly avoiding capture by Batman, the Riddler was picked up by Two-Face in his van, leaving a clue box containing several LEGO parts. Unseen either villian, Batman attatched a tracking device to the vehicle.
The Riddler then met up with Mr. Freeze to retrieve a freeze cannon from the frozen scientist' old ice cream factory base. Dropped off by Two-Face, the pair worked their way through the building, eliminating Police guards, until they reached the room where the cannon was stored. When Batman and Robin arrived, having followed the signal from Two-Face's van, Riddler watched Freeze fight of the Duo and then escaped to two-Face's van with the cannon, leaving a clue box behind.
The Riddler took the cannon back to Two-Face and his van. They relaxed briefly, but the Police soon arrived and forced the villians to escape. After the van was destroyed by Batman and Robin, the pair split up. Riddler ran and was cornered by the Dynamic Duo, but was rescued by Poison Ivy, who threw down seeds that would grow and lift him to safety. After throwing down another clue box, they left for their next crime scene.
They travelled to Gotham's botanical gardens, where after fighting off Police, they accquired several mutant plant seeds that grow very tall, very quickly. After letting Ivy fight the Dynamic Duo, Riddler escaped yet again, leaving a final clue box.
With the rest of his team incarcerated, Riddler met up with Two-Face. they dug a tunnel into Wayne Tech's headquarters, where they stole the final item needed for the plan: a powerful superlaser.
With all they needed in hand, the duo travelled to thhe coast near the Gold Reserve's island. Here they used the freeze cannon to create an icy path across the water to the foot of the island. Once there, they used the plant seeds to quickly rise up to the main entrance. Here Two-Face attempted to blast open the doors with the laser, but the shot rebounded and destroyed the weapon. The duo were subsequently forced to, whilst under heavy Police fire, construct a giant mind control device and take over a Police helicopter pilot to blast their way inside.
Progressing through the Reserve, they eventually reached the vault, and with some help from a giant robot and the key, got inside. After a brief celebration, they were forced to go and defend the vault from the rapidly advancing Dynamic Duo. Despite their efforts, the Duo reached the inner vault, and first fought Two-Face. Upon Dent's defeat, Riddler began firing on the heroes with the vault's defence laser. After the Duo destroyed the weapon, he began alternating between fighting them himself and mind-controlling the sobbing Two-Face, until he was eventually defeated.
Following his defeat, he was returned to Arkham and locked up along with his associates.

[edit] Powers and Abilities
In LEGO Batman: The Videogame, The Riddler can use his cane to control weak-minded individuals. He can also use it to briefly stun opponents and manipulate guards at "?" marked booths

The Riddler uses a jetpack when escaping from Batman, Robin and the police. He also shares a hideout along with Bane where they keep all their loot and weapons. His weapon of choice is a cane with a question mark on the top (featured only in the videogame).
